What is web design and why is it so important?

Web design is the general term for all the creative work on and around websites. It includes the layouting of a website, as well as the main design concept and the planning and design of every component and part of the pages.

The importance of a good webdesign is pretty obvious. A nicely designed website not only makes the experience for the enduser as enjoyable and fun as possible, it also makes the site rememberable and helps to increase your sellings or whatever target you have with your website.

In the following I'll go through the details of what (good) webdesign means to me and what you can expect when you hire me to do the job.

Planning Websites

The structure of the website is essential and should be planned out before the layout and the design, since latter depend on it. By structure, I mainly mean the content basis of the website, including menus and site maps.

To structure the future content of the website, several things should be thought about:

What is the website's purpose? What actions do I want the endusers to make? What services or products am I trying to sell or bring to the enduser. What information are crucial to the enduser, what are the endusers most likely looking for when they come to the website...

It doesn't need to be too detailed and for sure some of it will change later on when you fill in your actual contents or over time maintaining your websites content, but you should get an idea of the basic sturcture of your contents to get a frame for the layout.

Creating Layouts and Designs

This is the obvious part of the designing stage: creating the actual layouts and designs for the website. Thanks to the planing before, we now know what to take into account for these. This includes for example what kind of different page layouts do I need. Usual types would be homepage, category, landing pages and

standard content pages. For each of these page types there should be a layout planned.

The design will be what triggers the endusers first impression of your website. Also it is responsible (together with the layout) to lead them through your contents, in the best case towards the target you want them to. Therefore it is clear, that a good layout and a good design do a lot to make the final website successful.

Good web design is not just a matter of taste

Mobile Design

There has been a new rule around in the web design and developing business: mobile first.

This might seem a bit too much, but considering the enormous increase in the usage of mobile devices it's absolutely legit. It doesn't mean you should also focus on developing and designing for desktop screens, but a website which is not useable on a tablet or smartphone is a clear disadvantage nowadays.

Great User Experience

As mentioned before, the enduser will be lead through your website by the given design and layout. Therefore it should be as easy and intuitiv as possible.

It should also support the purpose of the website, leading the user to crucial information and the planned action or selling point. This can also be achieved by special features and functions offered on the website.

Increase Your Sales

Or whatever your targeted enduser action might be. Afterall this is the purpose of your website, so the aim should be to optimize this.

By excellent design and layout work, the basis is set to do so. No matter if you want to get more enquiries, more online sales, more calls or more acutal offline customers.
